Q:How important is networking in your career? Any tips?

Answers to this question

  • Critical.

Some of the most important opportunities will happen in the bar across the street from the conference because of an intro from someone who respects your work ethic (see above).

  • I don’t go to conferences or actively try to “build a network” — it’s just not how I operate. I build connections through the work itself: collaborating, solving problems, being reliable. That feels more real to me.

My tip? Do great work and be someone people want to work with again — that builds its own kind of network.

  • It’s everything, but I don’t treat it like networking. I just stay in touch with people I like working with. That’s what matters.

  • Super important!

Collect contacts during your studies, at conferences, and events. Be active on social media — it’s a great way to find like-minded people.

  • Networking is important—but as an introvert, I prefer rare, deep conversations over frequent, shallow ones. I focus on topics that feel relevant either to me or to the person I’m speaking with at that moment.

I write blog posts from time to time, usually to sum up what I’ve learned or share details about a project. Writing things down helps me understand them better, and sometimes it brings the right people into my orbit and leads to great conversations.

In a fast-evolving field like Data, staying updated is crucial. But I don’t want to get “Stack Overflowed”. I try to follow a few people in the industry whose curation style and tone resonate with me.

Information hygiene is the boss 🙂

  • I've built all my businesses through the right connections, ranging from founders of multimillion-dollar public companies to international government leaders. How?

🕵️‍♀️ Explorer mode on: I focused on learning from others.

I've found that people are much more open when you approach them with genuine curiosity, not a sales pitch.

    For me, that meant:
    • Being honest and open from the start, just like you'd want others to be with you
    • Listening more than talking
    • Finding a mentor in the industry who could guide me and introduce me to others
    • Keeping my online presence updated and authentic, so it reflects who I really am

Networking isn't about collecting contacts—it's about building your tribe. It’s the people who inspire, support, and challenge you.

The truth is, building tribes is part of being human—it’s wired into our DNA.

So don’t overthink it. Just lean into your natural ability to connect—in whatever way feels right to you.
